Why Should You Keep A Journal?

Why a journal?

People from varied fields of work, who have achieved great success, almost all social media gurus, even therapists whose work involves dealing with human emotions and the human brain have all stressed much on the need to keep a journal. But, is it worth the hype? Does keeping a journal necessarily make a difference in our lives? If, so then, how?

Here’s a list of 4 reasons that are adamant on convincing you to own a journal right away:

1. Provides Clarity- Oftentimes we tend to get strangled in a pool of thoughts, necessary and unnecessary, and in a scenario like this bifurcating the necessary from the unnecessary gets difficult.

However, writing thoughts down allows us to have that clarity. Actually seeing the thoughts written down on the paper rather than just having them in the head helps us understand that most of them are either a by-product of overthinking, meant to stress us or are random thoughts, that are entirely insignificant. We see the thoughts, quite literally and are able to analyze them from a third person’s perspective.

This could be true for anything we decide to jot down, be it work related uncertainty, emotional upheaval, general anxiety or anything else that bothers us.

2. Think Better- Writing involves thinking. Following the previous point, writing allows space for thinking. Every moment numerous thoughts are crossing our mind therefore, thinking or focusing on one important thought naturally gets difficult.

While writing our brain is occupied with that one idea or thought that we give it, which allows it to go deep into it, so that we start to have a clear and better understanding about the matter in question. This process teaches us to look at people, situations and everything from a varied perspective, so we learn to apply it even when not writing but actually facing the situation.

3. Vulnerability- Anne Frank had said, “Paper has more patience than people”, and we can not disagree. So many times it happens when we have things to say but do not know whom to confide in, that’s when your journal can come to the rescue. We can write anything and everything and no one will judge, no one will give you unsolicited advice, no one will even ask you to shut up and you can just be. Does it sound good? It feels even better. Writing down the emotions is equally satisfying as talking about them. The difference is we can be transparent without once being apologetic.

4. Why technology won’t help?- A very common question that people usually have regarding keeping a journal is that in times of iPads and phones what is the need to keep a physical journal? It’s inconvenient.

Well, we agree it is a bit inconvenient however, writing down on paper with a pen or pencil tells your brain that something actually important is being jotted down (our brains are hardwired like that) and it calls for attention. We automatically get more focused and take it seriously (let’s not even discuss the amount of time we spend in front of our screens already!).

The way journaling every day helps is that we are more clear and aware of the thoughts we have on a daily basis, which in turn helps us to be more light-headed and thereby, positive.

Keeping a journal, developing a habit to write for yourself helps us in more ways than one and eventually becomes a personified friend that says nothing but listens to everything we got to say.

How to Start as a Graphic Designer?

The world has turned all digital. The companies, big or small, are working to establish themselves on the digital map. In order to achieve that a very common yet highly significant role is played by the graphic designer. They design for the company’s website and renew the designs from time to time and also, for their social media platforms.

The demand for ‘good’ designers is increasing and so is the competition. However, it should not scare you to stop trying in fact, it should entice you to work harder than before.

To start with you have two options-

Option 1- Enroll in a design institute.

Option 2- Now, if option-1 is possible then it’s all good. However, chances are that if you are reading this blog this option might not be applicable to you. In that case, given below are a few guiding steps that one could undertake and start off in the design career.

1.Design Basics- In order to build a high-rising building it’s crucial to build the base strong. Clear/ not-so-clear/ not at all clear basics make all the difference. Get yourself acquainted and well-versed with the basic design principles as they are the foundation of anything you do ahead in design.

They provide the support needed for your potential high-rising career. Spend a good number of hours into it- learn them, practice them, apply them wherever you can-do build them rock solid. It could not be stressed enough but, they are extremely important and one could not afford to neglect them.

2.Design Resources- It is the era of the internet. There is hardly anything you look up for and don’t find it on the net. Design resources can be searched for on the internet, in the form of books and magazines and gather as much knowledge as possible.

One very useful resource is YouTube. There are multiple channels where people with real experience and true knowledge show up to help beginners and designers in general. You can always ‘ask’ google for help. In fact, you can also take up free courses for some time usually, for a month or so. Even though free, they can prove helpful for the initial period.

Have a research on these resources and grab everything you think will benefit you.

3.Design Softwares- There are softwares used by graphic designers for their work such as, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator to name a few. A graphic designer must have the knowledge and practice on working on all these softwares.

Of course, it isn’t possible to have a strong grip on all of them in a short duration of time- it takes years of practice. To begin with it is important that a designer is at least capable of working on Photoshop and Illustrator.

Anyone can learn to use them just by searching up for tutorials on YouTube. There are a number of generous people out there who actually try and solve any query you might have and it is not just the tutor himself but an entire community that is learning from the same source.

4.Make Projects- Once all the above steps are done with you can finally start working on real projects of your own. They need not be for someone else but just for yourself. You can create mock-ups, brand identity of popular brands and a lot more which can later be used as projects of your portfolio.

This portfolio can be shown to the potential clients you deal with and start earning either as a side income or work harder and become a full-fledged graphic design professional.

To complete all these steps will take a little longer than what you could have imagined but every bit of patience pays and pays very well! So hang on, genuinely work on yourself and your skills because hard work accompanied by smart work is the key.

Geniuses Talk to Themselves

According to the dictionary, a genius is someone who has an exceptional talent or skill that is beyond the norms. Simply put,  geniuses are just the normal people who know how to utilize their mind, body and energy in the right direction to achieve anything. So many people think that geniuses are born with it however, much to their surprise and luckily, geniuses are MADE.

The question we should be asking now is, how? Well, first of all, there is not just one thing that makes up a genius however, we will be discussing one such habit that all geniuses practice and that is, talking to themselves.

It might sound weird at first but if you go ahead and do a little research you will find highly successful people speaking about this trait and how it helped them. Just don’t do it in public!

Science behind it- Normally, there is a horrendous number of thoughts that we have every day clearly, every thought is not important in fact, most of them are immaterial. When we talk ourselves through those thoughts we are able to derive sense out of them and also get a clearer picture of how many of them are invaluable.

According to the scientists at Bangor University, talking out loud to yourself is a “trait of higher cognitive function.”

All this is not related to you being born with this trait. The good news is that you can very well develop it like any other skill.

How?

Talk Like a Friend- Talk to yourself as you would with a friend. Our mind is a highly vulnerable friend that often gets terrified, sad, happy, distracted purely because of the thoughts. Now, you act like a mature friend, talk to this friend, literally and you will see the changes for the better.

Actively conversing with ourselves gives greater insights about what we want and what is right for ourselves than talking to someone else. If we get into the more spiritual realm of the things, Bhagavad Gita says that all the answers to the questions lie within us, we need to connect to ourselves to find them and hence, so many people practice meditation.

If you believe more in the science of things and not in spirituality it’s safe to tell you that even the scientists believe talking out loud to ourselves is beneficial for our mental health.

Ask Questions- The significance of asking questions is not unknown to anyone. It is just as important to ask questions to yourself as it is to anyone else. Question your actions, question your thoughts, question preconceived notions, question everything. There is no harm in asking but there is definitely some amount of danger involved if we go about living our lives without questioning the norms and reasoning out and geniuses do not do that.

Positive & Negative Self-Talk- “I am so stupid!”, “Why am I so dumb?”, “I am terrible”. Do these sound like you have heard them before? We are all guilty of it. At some point in our lives we have said harsh things to ourselves for the smallest of reasons.

Sometimes we mean them and sometimes we do not. We all need to outgrow this nature from our lives forever even if we do not mean it because still it hampers our mental health.

Talking good things automatically uplifts the mood. There is a saying that goes like “You are not happy and that is why you are laughing, you are laughing and that is why you are happy”, the same is true for talking out loud. Our actions tend to decide our mood more than the thoughts.

Positive talk ensures the right course of action and vice versa for the negative talk. Therefore, it’s imperative to be mindful while talking to ourselves.

When you listen to yourself and value your opinions more than others’ and lead through your instinct then, there’s a higher possibility of success and fulfillment in every area of life by directing your energies in the right direction. This is exactly what the geniuses do.

How to Develop Quiet Confidence?

How to develop quiet confidence seems to be a far fetched question. Let’s first understand what quiet confidence is.

An unpopular opinion says that confidence is quiet. Contrary to the long time established norm that a confident person has to be equally loud, this opinion has something to offer. Dharmesh Shah, the co-founder of HubSpot had said it right, “Confidence is not bravado, or swagger, or an overt pretense of bravery. Confidence is quiet. Confidence is a natural expression of ability, expertise, and self-regard.”

It is also a falsely perceived notion that introverts are the people with little or no confidence at all. However, paradoxically, loudest people are seen to be the most insecure people..

Confidence is not loud, the fear of being exposed is.

Quiet confidence comes to those who are not looking for validation, who are in very much peace with themselves, who are mostly aware of what they want and what they stand for but do not ever feel the need to show it to others. It is automatically reflected in their personalities because it is within them.

The most important question that now arises is, how to develop it? Following are some points to be considered as an answer to the question.

1. Talk Less- The one who is truly wise or confident knows the importance of talking less and listening more. You, speaking only when necessary allow others to speak their mind, which is important in ways that listening to others teaches a lot more than talking yourself. When you actually know more you realize how fruitful as well as peaceful it is to remain silent and listen, and observe.

However, being silent, by any means, does not imply that you stop expressing at all. That is unhealthy and definitely not what any confident person does. The few things to take care of are,  what we express where and how.

2. Be Assertive- As mentioned earlier, talking less is a wonderful habit but, saying nothing at all is wrong. In fact, a confident person has the courage to speak up wherever necessary without a second thought.

Quiet confidence, as a concept doesn’t propagate silence as its core value rather it encourages assertiveness.

Being assertive and not indulging in a verbal argument should also be taken care of. Putting forth your views without the desperation of proving yourself right is the most common and important trait of a confident person. Therefore, calmly expressing yourself is just as effective, if not more than shouting out your views to grab everyone’s attention.

3. Stop People Pleasing- When you make zero efforts to please the people around you who do not really matter you are allowing yourself to be your authentic self, there is no pretense, there is an air of comfort surrounding you, that is when you feel the most confident.

The baggage of how YOU should behave, dress, talk, etc. so that OTHERS feel good is carried by many and is wrong on so many levels. The major reason for being under confident is the constant thought of other people’s opinions of us. Anyone who is not bothered by either validation given or not exudes tremendous confidence.

Lastly, confidence is a skill that is developed over a period of time. It won’t happen overnight and the graph wouldn’t be a straight line, it will be followed with ups and downs, which is far better than remaining under confident for our entire lives. Quiet confidence is a very strong skill, which when acquired can take us places.
